Pentax K3 is a name that can recall many memories for the photographer about SLRs. It first introduced the Pentaprism into the SLR, which now is the important part of the DSLR cameras. But as the digital cameras became the main stream of the camera market, Pentax has been a little behind the fast develop digital age, so its market positon isn’t well entrenched as it was during the old days. However, Pentax continues to attract some devoted following of enthusiasts. Pentax has long been a little different from the ‘big two’ SLR makers, which can fulfilled some extra needs of the customers.
The K-3 is a mid-sized DSLR that offers a weatherproof body with magnesium alloy, there is no doubt that the K-3 was a well-built DSLR, but some may complain about the 800g weight of the fully loaded body. Obviously, the camera is hard to be held with one hand, but the large grip also makes it feel secure in you hands. The weatherproof is one classical feature in Pentax’s products, the K-3 has a total of 92 seals around the body, which keep water and dust out. In addition, the camera can function at temperatures as low as -10℃. Pentax DSLRs have always had a mode dial, with some different exposure modes that you can’t find in other brands. These including sensitivity priority(Sv) and aperture +shutter priority (TAv) modes. The autofocus system is also different from other brands. There are 25 cross-type in the center, with only 2 dots on the left and right, mostly these two dots are not in use. The overall performance of the AF system is great, the accurate of the AF system is good in both high lighting and low lighting conditions. As the K-3 has removed the optical low pass filter, the camera is featured with new Anti-aliasing ‘simulator’ which has a sensor-shift image stablizor to deliberately move the sensor during the exposure, which can slightly blur the image to reduce the moiré effect. Interestingly, the K-3 does not have a built-in WIFI , but you still can get the WIFI function via a SD card which has a WIFI module. With the dual SD cards slots, the WIFI function will be easier to get. The K3 has the strongest video specs in the Pentax’ lineup, it can record 1080 videos at 24p, 25p or 30p. The K3 also gains a headphone socket for monitoring audio, and changes the video format from Motion JEPG to more efficient H.264 formant. But while recording the video, the camera gives no focus aids, which makes recording video a little hard to control.
The K3 is able to present some excellent images, with a 24.4Mp APS-C sensor, the camera shows excellent performance at low ISOs and remains pleasantly clean as the light level falls. At the ISO 6400, you may see same noise in the image, but in a well control way, the details can still be brought out.
Pentax K3 is pricier than Canon or Nikon’s products. For the bugdet buyers, the Pentax K3 may mot be the best choice. But with a solid build body and rich features, the K3 can be a excellent camera for the shooters wanting a classic DSLR.
The Pentax K3 are mostly for the pro-photographers, and its good performance in photography is praised by the users, but as the movie recording functions slightly lag back the overall comments about the K3, this camera may be more suitable for the photographers not the videographers.
As Pentax K3 was once the flagship product of Pentax, it shows the highest quality of Pentax. The K3 offers rich features for the photographers, including a 100% coverage viewfinder, solid build body. It's a best choice of the enthusiast shooters who are shooting in different environments, which need a solid build camera which can resist some extreme conditions. But as the K3 did not bring a astonishing video shooting capability, the videographers may feel disappoint with it. Good for: Photography enunciators who does not care much about the budgets; profession photographers
