Amateur videographers find it hard to simultaneously learn all the manual controls of a handycam and also produce aesthetic videos. Sony HDR PJ series of camcorders are designed to address such users. Almost all the features are done automatically – giving space to the videographer to churn out near professional videos. A Sony product however, comes with a price. Find out whether it suits your budget.
The 2.7-inch handycam has a built-in projector. The capacitive touchscreen is sensitive to various finger gestures. Gentle gestures allow the touchscreen to perform, such as pick the appropriate focal point, operate a button in the interface, increase exposure or track movements in the scene. The gizmo is also noted for its precise video shooting. There is no shaking of images even with a long focal length. This especially happens when the object is moving at a high speed. The camcorders of this series support at least 24p Cinema mode and 30p Progressive Shooting Mode. The intuitive interface helps to make the video recording experience comfortable. Settings for shooting and recording are clearly provided in the interface. The BIONZ image processor has the capability to capture better images and perform faster. This also helps to reduce the noise in the images – It is not necessary to manually change the settings during a shoot. This is automatically done by the camcorder. There is a 55x zoom which is quite powerful to magnify a small object at a long distance. Whether the object is moving at a long distance or just motionless, the versatile zoom can accommodate the conditions to provide a perfect zooming experience. It is possible to transfer the videos from camcorder to the computer through the already-intalled PlayMemories Home tool.
The HDR PJ models are quite expensive, especially when many users feel that the sensor should support more than 8.9MP. Don’t forget however, that it has 16GB storage space, fairly long battery life, and an integrated USB charge cable. The specifications too are detailed and for the high-end camcorders. Naturally, it comes with a cost.
The videos support 1920x1080/60p/24p HD video streams. The gizmo is also equipped to capture 24.1MP static photos. Handy PJ model supports videos of MP4 or AVCHD file formats. The speed of recording is at 60 frames per second (fps). The edges are sharp and detailed. Color of the images is enhanced. Tonal gradation is fine. The HDR PJ camcorders have 1/5.8 Exmor R CMOS sensor which are highly sensitive to light. Even in dark scenes, the sensor can pick fine images – with no noise. So, videos are always sharp, crisp, and steady. Powered by Carl Zeiss lens, the camcorder can pick right amount of light for the videos. SteadyShot Active Mode corrects the vibrations while an object is moving and gives a clear image. The texture of the images is rich and tone is clear. The patented By Pixel Super Resolution technology from Sony increases the quality of the image up to 4x – this offers better detailing of the image. Intelligent Auto recognizes 60 or more scenes and Tracking Focus technology keeps a track on the subject in the scene. Images are also unique with Sony’s Smile Shutter that captures photos of smiling faces. The Face Recognition tool helps to detect faces to optimize color and focal length.
The ergonomically designed and good-looking handycam from Sony is just right to for an equally stylish user to show-off during a video shoot. Although it looks trim with angular ends, yet it is slightly bulky. It has a dimension (58 x 56 x 106.5) mm and weighs 210grams. However, there is a perfect groove which allows the fingers to deftly hold the gizmo while shooting. One side is slightly rough to ensure better friction while holding the camcorder. The buttons are strategically placed so that it reaches the fingers easily. There are slots for memory cards and a flap which allows the user to open the rechargeable batteries if necessary.
Users can check the Sony customer assistance desk at the company’s official website. There are manuals, video tutorials, start up guides, and tips to manage your camcorder. There are warranty options as well. For any technical issues, the customer can speak to the representative to get the glitch solved quickly.
